Building a 3D scanner from scratch

Our CTO Zdeněk Glazer will speak up in a new mini-series

For three years we’ve been working hard to build a fully automated 3D scanning device. One which would be able to capture perfect, fully optimized 3D model of literally anything in just a few minutes. No matter the glossiness, color palette, materials and surfaces… no matter anything! 

Our goal was to build nothing short of a “holy grail” 3D scanning machine. The good news is we’re finally almost there. The bad news is, we will never be actually there. There will always be things to polish, tweak, the tech will be evolving and our competitors will (likely) be catching up. We still need a living person to check every model for perfection and confirm it’s ready to be used in any environment within the client. Video games, AR, VR, film production, web, e-shops… doesn’t matter. Quality always comes first. 

Building a proprietary 3D scanner from scratch means a LOT of work to be done and different professionals needed. Did you ever hear that making a videogame is the ultimate form of art? You need everybody: Programmers, 2D, 3D artists, animators, writers, musicians, mocap technicians… this list could continue for a long time.

It’s the very same concept with a 3D scanner. We need to write our own software. Build our own hardware. Write algorithms, tweak our neural networks, work with autonomous robots, perform some 3D artistry. I’d like to speak about each and every one of these topics in the following days and weeks. But for now, the thing I want to do the most is to praise our team for the good work. We have a wide range of professionals, each being expert in their field and still being able to absorb a lot from the others. That makes us unique, and that makes us a well functioning team. We do all by ourselves, unlike our competitors. 

So big kudos to you all and I’m really looking forward to the many years to come 😊
